The PhD student can request the Board of Professors to issue a “Doctor Europæus” certification - in addition to the national PhD title - in compliance with the conditions required by the European University Association and referred to in art.33 of PhD University Regulations, as indicated below:
- positive thesis reviews by two professors belonging to two universities in two different Member States of the European Union other than the one where the PhD course takes place, chosen by the Tutor and the Board of Professors
- at least one member of the judging commission must belong to a university in a Member State of the European Union other than the one in which the thesis is discussed; this member cannot coincide with one of the referees
- a part of the thesis discussion must be carried out in a European Union language other than the one where the PhD is carried out
- preparation of the thesis in a language other than the one where the PhD is carried out following a stay of at least three months (even non-consecutive) in one of the EU and non-EU countries adhering to the Bologna Process, the list of which can be found on the page https://ehea.info/page-members, certified by a formal declaration from the supervisor on headed paper of the European university or European research centre proving the work carried out by the PhD student
The PhD student requesting the mention, must present the Request for the mention of Doctor Europæus to the Board of Professors within three months of the beginning of the third academic year. By the deadline set for the submission of the application for the public discussion and the delivery of the thesis, the candidate must submit to the Board of Professors the documentation indicated above and required by the PhD University Regulations in art. 33, for verification of the requirements by the Board of Professors.
The documentation relating to the Doctor Europæus Mention, following verification by the Board of Professors, will be sent to the judging commission appointed to award the title.
When sending the application for the final exam, the PhD student must include among the attachments the duly completed Application for the Doctor Europæus mention
