EU and EEA students are guaranteed health services under the same conditions as Italian citizens, paying any tickets and benefiting from the same free services. Therefore, as a European citizen, covered by the health service of a Member State, students have the right to receive medical treatment in Italy. The costs of treatment will be covered by students home country’s health authorities.

For non-EU students health insurance coverage is required in order to obtain your visa and your residence permit in Italy. International students can purchase a private health insurance policy or register to the Italian National Health Service (Servizio Sanitario Nazionale – SSN) and get a family doctor.
From 2024, the SSN registration fee is €700 and covers the calendar year (January 1 – December 31). If you purchase before January 1, you will pay the full amount for a shorter coverage period and will need to renew again for the new year.

For private health insurance international students can go to any insurance agency or the Italian Post Office. The policy must cover all risks of illness, accident or maternity.
