Department: Department of Cognitive Science, Education and Cultural Studies

The PhD course is continuously active from the 18th cycle and offers a broad spectrum training starting from the “cognitive turning point”. Cognitive sciences, in fact, constitute a field of study that does not refer to specific sectors but to research fields that respond to complex and intrinsically multidisciplinary problems. The unitary object of study is the nature and functioning of the mind in any natural or artificial system, but it is investigated here by a variety of approaches. Philosophy, psychology, neuroscience, linguistics and computer science, constitute the architraves of classical cognitivism. More recently it has extended to the social sciences and those of evolution, producing new disciplines such as bioethics, neuroesthetics, cognitive ethology, social neuroscience: all objects of the doctoral training proposed here. More than in a set of contents, cognitive sciences are recognized in an interdisciplinary method based on the integration between the rigor of the natural and technological sciences and the breadth of the interpretative spectrum of the human sciences, adopted as the fundamental educational objective of the PhD course. The division into two curricula (philosophical-naturalistic and technological-social) consistent in terms of content and methodology outlines a training framework that is completely congruent with the ERC SH4 sector “The Human Mind and its complex: cognition, psychology, linguistics, philosophy and education”.

During the PhD Course in COGNITIVE SCIENCES the student must:
1) acquire high-level skills through the in-depth study of one of the research areas included in the two curricula of the Course (philosophical-naturalistic and technological-social);
2) adopt and test methodologies, research techniques and data analysis, with the use of technological tools (hardware and software) suitable for the specific applications of one’s field of study;
3) design and implement an original research plan, commensurate with the international standards with which it will have to deal;
4) engage in communication activities and dissemination of their results (through the presentation at seminars, conferences and conventions; the publication of scientific articles and essays; the care of their networking activities with international communities of scholars on specific topics of their research );
5) draw up a thesis that fully and articulate the process, methodology and results of your research project and discuss it orally at the end of the three years.

For the realization of these objectives, the PhD Course in Cognitive Sciences provides specific training resources. The main ones are:
– Ad hoc courses that provide knowledge and skills typically not acquired in previous study paths and preparatory to all the research activities carried out in the context of the specific know-how of the PhD. The educational offer is prepared annually, presented in the Manifesto of Studies and described in the related syllabus.
– Supervision: from the beginning of the doctoral course, up to the discussion of the thesis, each student is supported by a tutor identified within the Teaching Body. The tutor is the main interlocutor within the course and his / her functions are described in the University Regulations for Research Doctorates. The doctoral student can also be assisted in his research work by co-tutors belonging to the PhD Committee or also by experts belonging to other Italian or foreign universities, only after having been specifically appointed by the college.- Change of year exam: evaluation test and comparison with the members of the Teaching Body from which to receive input on their research, better identify their training and career development needs and objectives.
– Seminars and interviews: organized by the doctoral course or by the department, or by other structures of UNIME or other Italian or foreign universities.
– Research laboratories and equipment: during the doctorate the doctoral students have access to the laboratories and research equipment of the COSPECS Department, both in the Messina and Noto offices, and are assisted by technical support staff.
– Internationalization and Mobility: during the PhD course the PhD student will carry out, starting from the second year, a period of study and research at a foreign research institution of an average duration of 6 to 8 months, according to the established procedures of the University Regulations for Research Doctorates
– Support for mobility and research: The University Regulations for PhD programs provide for the possibility of an increase of the scholarship equal to 50% for the period spent abroad, to which a contribution from the doctoral course for travel expenses can be added . In addition, each student receives a budget that they can use to present their research at conferences, conventions and small group meetings, participate in workshops, and / or possibly purchase research material.
– Bibliographic resources: during the PhD course the PhD student has access to the vast University Library System and other integrated electronic resources.
– Language courses: PhD students and doctoral students have access to all departmental and university resources, as well as to the language improvement laboratory.
– Tools for the dissemination and dissemination of results (own series or journals of Band A (ANVUR), SCOPUS and ISI, specific initiatives of Unime Research Centers.
Each of these resources is described in detail in the specific parts of this sheet.

Doctors of Philosophy in cognitive sciences find employment both in the field of theoretical and applied research of each of the fields of which the cognitive sciences are constituted, including neuroscience, linguistics, artificial intelligence, philosophy and psychology, and in that of rehabilitation and care for people as well as in the field of technology of “cognitive artifacts”, ie all those devices that aim to increase human cognitive abilities. The fields of research mentioned above are among the most dense of opportunities in today’s landscape. Although they are practiced more abroad, even in Italy neuroscience, bioengineering and robotics, just to mention some experiences of sure social recognition, constitute authentic job opportunities. The field of cognitive rehabilitation is already developed and presumably will be even more so in the future as social awareness of disabilities and methods of their treatment grows. Finally, the use of technologies of “cognitive artifacts” is proving to be one of the high-tech sectors most capable of guaranteeing employment: the construction of ontologies for the web, the simulation of market behavior, the design of ergonomic artifacts are some some examples. Furthermore, the PhD program in Cognitive Sciences proposed here prepares professionals of digital interfaces for private individuals and the public administration, with theoretical and applicative skills in relation to social and territorial contexts, as well as cultural heritage and local resources. To initiate the PhD students to undertake an employment path in the directions described, the PhD has undertaken protocols of collaborations, internships and stages with some companies.

The PhD in Public Administration Sciences intends to provide a high-quality training offer, characterized by an interdisciplinary, multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary connotation and oriented both to the definition of research paths and to the qualification of public administration personnel.
It aims to make students acquire the methodological skills and content knowledge necessary for the training of highly specialized professional operators in the sectors of public administration, research in public and private institutions and in the field of professions, with the aim of training professionals with planning skills and able to pursue the advancement of knowledge in basic and applied research in the historical-political-institutional, legal, statistical-economic, economic-business areas.
It also provides for the acquisition of transversal skills to be transferred in the scientific and professional fields, with particular regard to all sectors of public and private administration.
The training activities will be developed in line with the objectives of the PNRR with particular regard to the needs of the digital transformation process of public administrations and the ecological transition.
The PNRR, as is known, provides for structural interventions aimed at supporting the digital transition and the modernization of public administration, communication infrastructures and the production system. In this perspective, it intends to ensure coverage of the whole territory with ultra-broadband networks, improve the competitiveness of industrial chains, facilitate the internationalization of companies, stimulate technology transfer to the productive world. At the same time, the same Plan aims to achieve the ecological transition of society and the economy in order to make the system sustainable and ensure its competitiveness. The importance, in this context, of efficient and adequate administrations to the changes in progress is evident which, not surprisingly, are the subject of transversal lines of development and implementation. The new systematic approach proposed by the PNNR requires, as an essential prerequisite for the success of the Plan, a competitive and adequate response from the Administrations, which necessarily involves the implementation and updating of traditional knowledge and the diversification of the same towards disciplines and knowledge that remain , to date, largely unrelated to the cultural background of public administrations.
In light of this framework, as part of the PhD activities, particular attention will be paid to the study of new technologies in the legal, economic and social sciences and to the in-depth study of issues related to the ecological transition.
The purpose of the PhD will be to develop research paths useful for defining and enhancing effective management, leadership and communication skills for public organizations, with specific reference to the selection, management and development of human resources, as well as to promote the digital transition of public administrations, through careful paths to the simplification of organizational models, as well as to the processes of selection and adoption of innovative technologies and digital solutions, in order to ensure greater effectiveness, efficiency and cost-effectiveness of public action.
A further objective of the course will be to support institutional planning also through the experimentation of more up-to-date governance models, also in relation to the resources provided by new information and communication technologies (ICT).
Therefore, it is foreseen the carrying out of activities useful to provide doctoral students with the knowledge and skills necessary for the research and identification of funding calls and the drafting of national, European and international projects, thanks to the support of specialized technical personnel.
The College will be made up of experts from academia, public administration roles and international organizations.
The activities will take place in an attractive and stimulating institutional environment, in which the organization of specialized laboratories, conferences and seminars will be held in which scholars and senior Italian and foreign officials will participate, which will allow the student to acquire autonomy and precious responsibilities for the professional path.
The Doctorate will make use of a quality assurance system different from the one set up for the I and II cycle of university training, aimed at improving the quality of the research environment and at defining transparent procedures for admission, supervision, release. degree and professional development of PhD students.

The course offers PhD students and PhD students the tools for understanding legal systems, as modified due to the Europeanization and internationalization movements of law and highly specialized training in the relevant scientific-disciplinary sectors of each curriculum, through a critical analysis and careful examination of the doctrinal orientations and solutions adopted by internal and supranational jurisprudence. Furthermore, the PhD in Legal Sciences intends to develop a multidisciplinary cognitive path of the evolutionary dynamics of Western legal systems, and European ones in particular, in the transition from their traditional reference contexts to those that are emerging in the scenarios of globalized post-modernity. The course, in cultivating the advancement of knowledge in the legal field, intends to carry out teaching and research activities with a multidisciplinary slant and specific attention is reserved for an interdisciplinary dialogue on the new legal issues that are imposed on the attention of scholars today. With this in mind, we intend to promote studies on legal change related to technological innovation processes and to this end a multidisciplinary path is activated; furthermore, the aim is to investigate the legal problems connected with the transition towards a sustainable development model. In a framework that favors interaction between multiple legal points of view, the training will also enhance the issue of the multidisciplinary relevance of the principle of equal opportunities and non-discrimination and gender equality. Furthermore, there are courses of linguistic improvement with lectures concerning the critical examination of sentences (in language) of the supranational courts and the results of the research are the subject of collective publications of the PhD students; a course in legal informatics is also provided for the purpose of acquiring IT skills and knowledge. Furthermore, PhD students and doctoral students will be invited to a meeting / debate on the code of conduct to protect the dignity of the people who work and study at the University of Messina, as the respect and full implementation of the set of principles and values ethics contributes, together with legal rules, to the integrity of research. The Doctorate favors the path of the academic career; the acquired training allows to practice the legal activity in all fields and specifically in the civil, criminal and administrative, international, commercial and transport, tax and labor fields; prepares official competitions at the institutions of the European Union and other international bodies and organizations; gives access to the competition in the judiciary and notary; constitutes an important qualification for the purposes of job placement in administrations, public bodies and companies. Furthermore, the multidisciplinary path in the technological field allows doctoral students to acquire the necessary skills to become lawyers specialized in privacy, network law, intellectual property protection, consultants for companies, with particular attention to new professions in the digital dimension; the path is also aimed at acquiring the skills necessary to hold positions of high administration or international agencies and organizations, also in relation to specific problems such as computerization and digitization. A further objective of the course is to train researchers and legal operators able to manage the complexities of the present time, especially as regards the interactions between the different actors involved in the legal definition of the sustainability paradigm, both from the side of private activity and from that of public and institutional activity. In the first case, job opportunities are provided in specialized professional firms, for example in the fields of environmental protection, human rights, renewable energy, social enterprise and sustainable finance, privacy protection and data protection personal.  With reference to public and institutional activities, on the other hand, employment opportunities are envisaged in public institutions and enterprises, independent authorities, national and international governmental and non-governmental organizations in the various sectors of intervention.
Job opportunities are supported by the collaboration protocols concluded by the University with professional associations, public administrations, international organizations and bodies and businesses.

The PhD course in Political Sciences expresses and combines the different training needs for advanced research of the Department of Political and Legal Sciences of the University of Messina. The Doctorate, therefore, makes use of the multiple scientific and disciplinary skills present in the Department. It arises from the awareness that only a multidisciplinary approach, typical of Political Science, can provide adequate tools and methodologies for the knowledge, orientation and interpretation of the complex nuances that characterize the complexity of the contemporary political world in its various and varied dimensions. In the same way, it is considered necessary to analyze the continuous and rapid evolution of national and supranational democratic political institutions, even in the face of the increasingly dangerous challenges launched by authoritarian regimes.
The specific training course for the first year will be aimed at deepening the history of political thought, contemporary history, political-social processes and legal-regulatory effects, with particular reference to the Italian context, the European Union, the American continent. . and to the analysis of the major issues of republicanism, constitutionalism and representative democracy in emergency situations. Particular attention will also be paid to understanding the governance processes in a globalized society, migration phenomena, the decline of monoculturalism and the new dimensions of citizenship.
The specific training objective for the second year will consist in deepening the construction of the national state with respect to historical, theoretical, institutional and political profiles. However, the critical observation of the difficult process of European integration, also as a consequence of the recent health emergencies, of the juridical-political confrontation between collective rights and individual rights and between forms of representative democracy and participatory democracy will not be neglected. In the third year we will investigate the dynamics of change, ecological, cultural and institutional transition of the globalized society and the correct understanding from the historical, legal, social and economic point of view of international relations and cooperation relations.
The oral tests are suitably foreseen by the teachers.

The PhD course in “Humanity” is structured in four curricula, which cover most of the humanistic knowledge, along a wide diachronic arc: Archeology and Ancient History; Anthropology and history; Ancient and modern philosophy; Philosophy. interdisciplinary cut, as demonstrated by the interconnection between the various thematic areas of the SSDD that appear within it, attributable to the two ERC sectors SH5 and SH6, and the presence in the College of specialists from two CUN areas (10 and 11). is expressed in the proposal of an educational offer common to the curricula, both in the first and second year, based on the identification of aggregating thematic areas, relating to theoretical and methodological aspects of the various research lines active in the PhD, presented in a transversal perspective The courses provided have the aim of opening the perspective of training to interdisciplinary dialogue, in order to strengthen effective interaction between the different curricula and promote concrete spaces for discussion between the doctoral students on methodological or epistemological issues of common interest. Training in the specific disciplinary areas of the different curricula is instead reserved for seminars, which involve the tutors and teachers of the college of the specific disciplinary areas and favors the possibility of specialist study, structuring a didactic practice that sees the doctorate students as an active part. of the training process: for each curriculum there are periodic meetings in which the work done is exposed and discussed. The project was born with the primary objective of training, for a correct approach to literary, historical-anthropological, archaeological and philosophical facts, young researchers equipped with the necessary tools for an adequate understanding of the culture and political-social aspects of the ancient world, Medieval, modern and contemporary Europe; this training, although declined in the four curricula, in highly specialized study paths, is based on an integrated dimension of humanistic knowledge and allows doctoral students to deal with research and techniques of neighboring disciplines, maturing that openness and that scientific flexibility that are essential qualities of the modern scholar. For the preparation of the thesis, study stays in Italian and foreign Archives and Libraries, participation in archaeological excavations and research and internships at Museums are foreseen.
The overall commitment is 180 training credits, distributed equally over the three years of the course (60 credits for each single year).
In the first and second year the training activity provides for the acquisition of a total of 18 ECTS, obtained thanks to the attendance of cycles of lessons (offered by the University of Messina, specifically dedicated to doctoral students).
Each CFU is equivalent to 6 hours of frontal lessons. In this first two-year period, the residual number of training credits (51 CFU per year) is attributed by the teaching staff to seminars aimed at specialized training and activities related to the specific research of individual doctoral students, including participation in congresses, schools, stays abroad.
