Certificates and PhD Parchment

PhD students and PhD graduates who need the PhD Certificate or Parchment may submit a specific request following the procedures indicated in the sections below, or they may use self-certification.

For the purpose of providing certification to Italian Public Administrations and public service providers, the applicant is required to use self-certification exclusively (Art. 15, Law No. 183/2011).

Certificates, in Italian and/or English, may be requested by submitting an application to the PhD Office. These documents may be used to certify one’s status to Italian private entities, foreign public or private entities, and Italian embassies and consulates abroad.

Self-certification

Self‑certification (also called a substitute declaration of certification) must be used when you need to confirm your academic status to Italian Public Administrations or Italian public service providers.
These institutions may, when necessary, ask the University to verify the information provided in your declaration. The University will then confirm your status or the awarding of your degree.

For PhD students and PhD graduates from the 31st cycle onward, it is also possible to download your self-declarations directly from your Esse3 profile, in the “Certificates” section. The following types of self-certification can be downloaded:

  • PhD Course enrolment - Cod. M1320
  • Enrolment in the Doctoral Course with specification of exams taken (end of year) - Cod. M1317
  • Tax payment per calendar year - Cod. 1319
  • Achievement of the title with specification of the Doctoral Course, title of the thesis, supervisor and indication of the awarded mark - Cod. 1318 (The title reads Graduation with exams)

However, it is not possible to use the self-certification in the case of Italian Consular Authorities abroad or for the Police Headquarters for the purposes of requesting or renewing the entry visa to Italy or the residence permit, for which the certificate of enrolment in the PhD course is required.

Certificates

The certificate can be requested in case of use for:

  1. Italian private entities
  2. Foreign public and private entities (foreign use)
  3. Italian Embassies/Consulates abroad
  4. Police Headquarters for the purposes of requesting or renewing the residence permit

The certificate can be requested in Italian or in English

Please note that each request corresponds to only one certificate.

The request must be sent by email with a scanned copy of a valid identification document attached to the email address protocollo@unime.it (and forwarded for information to dottorati@unime.it).

Once the request has been received, the PhD Office will activate on the Esse3 platform the PagoPA® invoice for the payment of the required amount.
