PhD students and PhDs who need to have a Certificate or PhD Parchment can request it by following the procedures specified in the attachments below or produce a self-certification.
To certify one's position towards Italian Public Administrations and Italian public service managers, self-certification must be used exclusively (art. 15 of law 183/2011).
The certificates, in Italian and/or English, can be requested by applying to the PhD Office. They can be used to certify one's position to Italian private entities, foreign public and private entities, Italian embassies and consulates abroad.
Self-certification
The self-certification, or substitute declaration, must be used to certify one's status to Italian Public Administrations and managers of Italian public services. The institution that receives the self-certification will subsequently be able to send a request for confirmation of the declared status or of the achievement of the qualification to the University, which will send the confirmation.
Those enrolled before the 31st cycle will be able to self-certify, while for PhDs and PhD students from the 31st cycle onwards it is possible to download from their Esse3 profile, in the Certificates tab, self-declarations regarding:
- PhD Course enrolment - Cod. M1320
- Enrolment in the Doctoral Course with specification of exams taken (end of year) - Cod. M1317
- Tax payment per calendar year - Cod. 1319
- Achievement of the title with specification of the Doctoral Course, title of the thesis, supervisor and indication of the awarded mark - Cod. 1318 (The title reads Graduation with exams)
However, it is not possible to use the self-certification in the case of Italian Consular Authorities abroad or for the Police Headquarters for the purposes of requesting or renewing the entry visa to Italy or the residence permit, for which the certificate of enrolment in the PhD course is required.
Certificates
The Certificate can be requested in case of use for:
- Italian private entities
- Foreign public and private entities (foreign use)

- Police Headquarters for the purposes of requesting or renewing the residence permit and can be requested in Italian or in English. Please note that each request corresponds to only one certificate.
The request must be sent by email with a scanned copy of a valid identification document attached to the email address protocollo@unime.it (and forwarded for information to dottrinati@unime.it).
Once the request has been received, the PhD Office will activate the PagoPA® payment slip relating to the payment of the requested amount on the Esse3 platform.
