
European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) funding for PhD programs
The Sicily Region, through the ESF+ funds the Regional Program "PR FSE+ Sicilia 2021/2027". Through the "PR FSE+ Sicilia 2021/2027" the Sicily Region finances Phd scholarships through the project called “Avviso 15/2024 PR FSE+ SICILIA 2021/2027 - Finanziamento di borse regionali di dottorato di ricerca in Sicilia A.A. 2024/2025 Prima finestra A.A. 2025/2026 Seconda finestra”, that has provided for the financing of PhD scholarships for the University of Messina for the academic years 2024/2025 and 2025/2026 for the implementation of the XL E XLI UniMe PhD cycle, activating for the First window A.A. 2024/2025 no. 30 PhD scholarships for which funds have been allocated for an amount equal to € 2.257.304,49, including a Second window for the A.A. 2025/2026 for which the financing of further no. 30 PhD scholarships for which funds have been allocated for an amount equal to € 2.257.304,49.
Scholarships will be awarded in accordance with the PhD Admissions Rankings and the requirements set forth in "Avviso 15/2024".
The scholarships are for a three-year period, and PhD programs require a minimum of eight and maximum of twelve months of study and research abroad, funded by the PR FSE+.

The Sicilian Region supports the promotion of higher education and postgraduate specialization at the PhD level in those disciplinary areas with a strong scientific and technological focus, or those most relevant to the needs in terms of highly qualified professionals.
Specifically, for previous cycles, the following were funded:
- 12 PhD scholarships for the XXXIV cycle A.Y. 2018/19
- 12 PhD scholarships for the XXXV cycle A.Y. 2019/20
- 10 PhD scholarships for the XXXVI cycle A.Y. 2020/21
- 10 PhD scholarships for the XXXVII cycle A.Y. 2021/22
- 12 PhD scholarships for the XXXVIII cycle A.Y. 2022/23
- 12 PhD scholarships for the XXXIX cycle A.Y. 2023/24
- 30 PhD scholarships for the XL cycle A.Y. 2024/25
- 30 PhD scholarships for the XLI cycle A.Y. 2025/26
with financial commitments equal to:
- € 734.946,48 for the realization of the project called “Dottorati FSE XXXIV ciclo Unime”;
- € 734.946,48 for the realization of the project called “Dottorati FSE XXXV ciclo Unime”;
- € 612.455,40 for the realization of the project called “Dottorati FSE XXXVI ciclo Unime”;
- € 612.455,40 for the realization of the project called “Dottorati FSE XXXVII ciclo Unime”;
- € 765.946,80 for the realization of the project called “Dottorati FSE XXXVIII ciclo Unime”;
- € 765.946,80 for the realization of the project called “Dottorati PR FSE+ Finanziamento di borse regionali di dottorato di ricerca in Sicilia A.A. 2023/2024 XXXIX ciclo Unime”
- € 2.257.304,49 for the realization of the project called “Dottorati PR FSE+ Finanziamento di borse regionali di dottorato di ricerca in Sicilia A.A. 2024/2025 XL ciclo Unime Prima Finestra”
- € 2.257.304,49 for the realization of the project called “Dottorati PR FSE+ Finanziamento di borse regionali di dottorato di ricerca in Sicilia A.A. 2025/2026 XLI ciclo Unime Seconda Finestra”
UNIME has managed to obtain significant funding from the European Union through the ESF through the Sicilian Region: Il finanziamento a valere del PR FSE+ Regione Siciliana 2021-2027, Obiettivo "Investimenti a favore della crescita e dell'occupazione, Asse III “Istruzione e formazione” Ob. 10.5. - Avvisi 15/24, 11/23, 1/22, 1/21, 37/20, 2/19, 24/18.

The Sicily Region, with "PR FSE+ Sicilia 2021/2027" funds, has financed 30 PhD scholarships for the University of Messina for the A.Y. 2024/2025, First window - 40th cycle, for a total amount of € 2.257.304,49, for the implementation of the project entitled "Avviso 15/2024 PR FSE+ SICILIA 2021/2027 - Finanziamento di borse regionali di dottorato di ricerca in Sicilia A.A. 2024/2025 Prima finestra A.A. 2025/2026 Seconda finestra" (40th and 41st UniMe cycles). The scholarships were awarded in compliance with the PhD Admission rankings and the requirements set out in "Avviso 15/2024".
The scholarships are for three years, and doctoral programs require a minimum of eight and maximum twelve months of study and research abroad, funded by the ESF+ Regional Development Fund (RP).
